Amsterdam’s famous canals serve an actual purpose: when they were first begun in the 1600s, they were critical for the city’s expansion. You see, the Netherlands are a low-lying country, and much of it is marshy or is occasionally flooded by the sea. To expand the prosperous city, Amsterdam had to drain nearby swamps into the new canals. In the spaces between the new waterways, building began. At the time it was the largest urban expansion in the world. The Dutch could afford it, though. They were the center of a global trade network, from the spice islands to the caribbean; the average income in Amsterdam was four times the average income in Paris.
